Children’s Books About Adoption:

______________________

Books are a great way to share an adoption journey with a child.  Mark Iverson recommends the following books:

I Love You Like Crazy Cakes – By Rose A. Lewis

Mother-love is profound, however a baby comes into a woman’s life. For Rose Lewis, the journey to motherhood begins with a letter to Chinese officials, asking if she can adopt from the “big room with lots of other babies.” The infants in that room in China are each missing a mother, but Lewis is missing something, too–a baby. She travels to China to meet her new little girl and falls head over heels in love. Taking her baby home to America, Lewis introduces her to all her family and friends, and they begin their life together.

Over The Moon: An Adoption Tale – Karen Katz

An affirming story about international adoption, based on the author’s own experience with her daughter. A magical, reassuring story of one adoptive family’s beginnings, told in words and pictures that are just right for the youngest child.

A Mother for Choco- Keiko Kasza

A Mother for Choco teaches to young adoptees that children do not need to resemble their parents to be loved by them.

Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born- Jamie Lee Curtis

A young girl asks her parents to tell her again the cherished family story of her birth and adoption.

The Red Blanket- Eliza Thomas

A touching and beautiful adoption story that reveals the challenges as well as the joys of forming a new family.

We See the Moon- Carrie A. Kitze

This is a story written from the child’s perspective, asking the questions that dwell in their hearts about their birth parents.

Happy Adoption Day!- Trevor Royle

This adaptation of McCutcheon’s song commemorates the day when a child joins an adoptive family. Complete with musical notation, these verses reassure adopted children they are special. Full-color illustrations.

Rosie’s Family: An Adoption Story- Lori Rosove

Rosie’s Family is an adoption story about belonging in a family regardless of differences. Rosie is a beagle who was adopted by schnauzers. She feels different from the rest of her family and sets forth many questions that children who were adopted may have. This adoption story also has tips for parents in the back.
